go pro and not beinb able to request mods.

When I created my forum on this site, and then upgraded to "GO PRO", I stupidly thought that it would either give me the option to install MODs to my board, or that I could request that it be done, (within reason, ie. it had to significantly improve the overall running of the board, or only ask every few months, and not bombard you with MOD requests) and they would be implemented?

I'm going to have to be honest and say that £10 is an awful lot to spend every month, to not have the ability to backup my forum DAILY, or to not be able to install modifications. (Every time I made a significant change to my forum, I would create a FULL backup of the entire site, and of the database, prior to implementing them)

I was paying my old host $23.95 a QUARTER to have access to EVERYTHING. (admittedly, this also meant that I had to DO EVERYTHING too)

I ONLY came across to yourselves because I'm no good with technical stuff, so I thought I could rely on you guys to do the regular "fiddly bits" behind the scenes for me? (forum upgrades)

On my old site, (which I still have webspace on, at the moment they are hosting my forum frontend, and I pay for my domain with them) I was backing up my forum DAILY. I can bet a pound to a penny that you guys will not agree to do a DAILY back up for me?

I appreciate that modifications = problems with upgrades, as in if a forum has a lot of modifications, you can NOT do a simple standard upgrade. My Fiancé did that bit for me on my old forum, simply because I was too thick to do it. It involved FTP and a lot of different files being edited, all in all it only took about an hour, but no matter how many times he showed me how to do it, I STILL couldn't get the hang of it, I even wrote it all down, from point 1 to point 50, but somehow I lost the stuff I had written down. (I must add here that I am mentally disabled, (as well as severely physically) which includes suffering with short term and long term memory loss, along with severe cognitive disability, which basically translates to "cannot learn or remember a single thing." - I'm not telling you to beg for sympathy, or to gain any type of advantage over my fellow "Go Pro'ers", I'm telling you so that, hopefully, you can begin to understand why I will rely so heavily on you guys doing my "behind the scenes" work for me)

So, am I to believe, that even though I am paying you £10/month, that I STILL can't have a MOD that I want installed? I notice the MOD section is closed for requests... You see I just want a mod that SHOULD be working in the software by default, and WOULD be, if I had my say at phpBB HQ, which is a simple image resizer. this one to be exact: http://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/mod/r ... e_resizer/

I KNOW it was also a MOD on my SMF forum, but it was so simple to install, AND when I ONLY had THAT MOD running, upgrading the forum software was easy peasy, so was upgrading the actual database. (again, this was SMF, I cannot even begin to think about how it would fare on phpBB because for the short time we were using phpBB, I never touched the admin section for anything other than making the frontend look more pretty)

I would beg you for tapatalk, but I was the only one who used to use it, so it'd be pretty unfair asking you to install that, just for my ease of use.

Anyway, I'll shut up now. IF I have stepped out of line, please erase this post, and I will know not to say anything more about it. (also need to add that part of my mental disability, blocks me from being able to read and understand the tone of others AND my own posts/emails/texts/letters etc, sometimes I can SOUND really "uppity" or the "P word" with a "Y" on the end and I have not even meant to in the slightest.)

I shall sit and patiently await a response.

Really sorry. We only mention some things we do.
We did not mention the things we don't.
(phone support, custom styles, twiter integration, chat function)
Again: sorry.

Why?
We use replication.(so your database is on 2 different servers.0 And we do a weekly backup.

You see I just want a mod that SHOULD be working in the software by default, and WOULD be, if I had my say at phpBB HQ, which is a simple image resizer

Great a resizer. So people don't have to think before they post?
(resize? calculate = CPU?)

I would beg you for tapatalk, but I was the only one who used to use it, so it'd be pretty unfair asking you to install that, just for my ease of use.

I'm hosting 8000 forum most of them for free.
Mods is a problem just the smae as upgrade.
Performance and regular upgrades are my priority.

Think you need custom support and hosting?

I want to apologise for my first posting.

I should have thought about your side of the issue, I now understand how stressful, time consuming and not worth your paid time, it must be for you to keep every member's forums up to date with the regular upgrades issued from phpBB, without having to worry about individual forums wanting specific MODs.

To be honest, I don't think I could possibly find hosting that is exactly how I want it to be. IF I did, the cost would probably be so expensive, that I would have to rob a bank to pay for it.

I only did a daily backup because I was always fiddling with bits that could break the whole forum.

I found a bbcode called rimg, which resizes an image that is too big, so basically instead of using the [img] tags, you would use [rimg] I have actually implemented it, but I need to know if it would put stress on your server by it being on every image that has not been previously resized? IF so, I will gladly remove it.

(bbcode = [rimg])
(html= <a href="{URL}"><img style="max-width:800px; max-height; 1600px;" src="{URL}" alt="Image" /></a> )

I haven't actually tested to see if it works yet, as I only put it on there yesterday, and I've been really busy trying to fix my frontend. (  of my forum :P )

Again, I apologise for my initial post. In hindsight I realise the error of my ways, and realise why you DON'T do what I expected you to do as hosts.

Hope you can forgive my outburst.

Best wishes

No problem.

I know there are people who need custom hosting and freelance coders.

I am NOT trying to start trouble, but you really need to edit your wording for the Go Pro page:

The Pro Package is a new package to phpBBhosts and is aimed at everyone, being affordable and practical the pro package is ideal for any type of forum.

At a ridiculously good price of £ 10 a month you can not go wrong!

What do i get for this?

Everything! you will get ads removed from your forum, unlimited backups, and get everything else on the upgrades page at no extra cost, and you still get the great support you always have had.

Are there any limits?

No not really we have not set any specific limits, but obviously if someone wanted some crazy amount of images or similar like 200 or more smiles then we would have to think again.

We want all our forums free and pro ones to have the very best service, this includes fast loading reliable ones.

Could i not get my own hosting and install my own forum for a price like this?

Yes you could but this is where we come in to our own.

We do all the technical stuff for you, you don't have to worry about installing phpbb as you may already know we do all of this. We do all updates and code changes for you, we add mods and styles. We do all the technical stuff so you have more time to focus on making your forum a success.

Imagine you had your own host and had to install the software, keep it up to date, add mods, styles etc it takes a lot of time and while your busy doing this your forum is left with the possibility of being down if a mistake is made.

Our business is forums we know what is needed. Is it not much nicer to pop in to the support forum and ask for a little help then just sit back knowing it is being sorted.

"Unlimited backups" = my forum backed up whenever I want? = No - therefore LIMITED backups.

"we add mods and styles" = you add mods and styles that I want? = No - NO MODS added.

"Our business is forums" = you know all about the forums you host? = No - unable to answer specific forum queries.

In the UK consumers are somewhat protected by TRADING STANDARDS, a Company is obliged to offer the services that they advertise:

Your consumer rights – products must be:

  • of satisfactory quality - last for the time you would expect it to and be free of any defects
  • fit for purpose – fit for the use described and any specific use you made clear to the trader
  • as described – match the description on packaging or what the trader told you.

Your responsibilities for the goods you sell

You are responsible for the goods you sell and if a customer returns an item they purchased from you that is faulty (it does not conform to contract) because it:

  • does not match the description
  • is not of satisfactory quality
  • is not fit for purpose,

Again, I am not trying to start trouble, I do not wish to lose my forum. It's just something you may want to consider?

Of course I have not researched whether the rules are different for internet purposes.

I shall leave it with you. Please do not close my forum, this post was made with YOU in mind. I'm trying to HELP you. NOT fight you.

best wishes

PLease check:
"Unlimited backups" = my forum backed up whenever I want? = No - therefore LIMITED backups.
unlimited is not possible.
Changed into multiple.

"we add mods and styles" = you add mods and styles that I want? = No - NO MODS added.
Mods added:
-Portal and our (custom) antispam mod (http://stopforumspam.com/ updated every hour)

"Our business is forums" = you know all about the forums you host? = No - unable to answer specific forum queries.
Unable?
Or is the supportforum not active enough?

We use replication:

So there is always a (realtime) backup.
It is almost unlimited :D

OK, no problem, thank you for clearing those points up, as I said, I was concerned for YOU, not myself.

With regard to the "add mods" piece, perhaps you should state that you
"add our choice of customised mods to make your board run even smoother"

I know that by stating you "add mods and styles" what you meant was that you give us about 30 odd styles to choose from, and that you add those particular MODs to improve the boards...

BUT.. to an English person, especially one as thick as me. - "we add mods and styles" means "we add MODs that you want, and Styles that you want"...

perhaps you should be a little clearer on the actual wording, so that you do not get someone complaining that you SAID you add mods.. for instance my suggestion above, (in the quote box) would clear up this matter in a "jiffy"? (very quick and without problems)

With regard to the

"Our business is forums" = you know all about the forums you host? = No - unable to answer specific forum queries.
Unable?
Or is the supportforum not active enough?

I have a few examples of where there was/is no answer to queries for help:

Function that you know nothing about on YOUR boards?

Asked 4 days ago, still NO answer from ANYONE?

I had to go onto the phpbb BBCodes forum to find the answer to this one, when YOU have the youtube button on YOUR support boards? I FINALLY found the answer TWELVE days after, and STILL NO-ONE had posted to help. How long would it have taken one of the admins here, to go into the BBCodes section, and copy and paste the text that I needed for my solution? (Or is it a MOD that you have on your board?)

Only asked today, but I won't hold my breath for a solution.

£120 a year is a lot of money to part with, to not receive help from the "support forum" for the very simple problems that I have. :( (ones that I could easily fix myself, had I got access to EVERYTHING to do with my phpbb board stored on your servers)

WHEN my host was properly up and running, (MAJOR problem with them being hacked, (someone who took advantage of a security hole) by googling their name, you can read that they've lost EVERYTHING belonging to ALL OF THEIR CUSTOMERS, the whole system was down from the Second week of December, until the last week in January! - and they now claim to be merging with a larger company, more like they've gone bust methinks, I lost my forum and everything stored on their servers. Everything on their servers AND backup (by the look of it!) was wiped.) even though there was a massive time difference as they are in America, they responded to my queries within 24 hours, EVERY time. I was only paying them $23.95 a Quarter. (£15.16 every 3 months)

I don't understand why your support forums are so "empty" if you have 800 customers, surely each one needs some amount of help at some point, where are they all? Or do they get preferential service by emailing you their problems?

Can I just ask, IF I find the "custom hosting" that you seem to think I need... can I take my board with me, or will you charge me an extortionate amount of money for that complete home directory AND database backup? I love phpBB, I want to keep every aspect of my forum, it's just that I'm not 100% happy with the way you guys deal with your £120 a year customers. :(

I look forward to your response.
